What I Am Up To
Acorn Consultancy, acornconsultancy.nl
October 15, 2005. Originally called Anahata, Acorn needed a fresh website to go along with their new name. I created a simple design and website powered by Ruby on Rails, which may become a homemade content management system. The site is presented in both English and Dutch, and may feature Flash animation (which I will teach myself soon enough!).
HCV Action Now, hcvaction.org
August 22, 2005. Working with Rudi Cilibrasi to bring forth awareness
about Hepatitis C and provoke action. Our initial efforts
included promoting a petition to the
Gates Foundation to increase funding, creating a Wiki to gather ideas and form a plan of
action, and managing flyer and T-Shirt campaigns to spread
the word. We have since incorporated and are in the process of obtaining
tax-exempt non-profit status under section 501(c)3. We are also administering
the HCV Research Mailing List.
Future plans include fundraising, staging demonstrations and more creative
campaigning.
CompLearn, complearn.org
August 21, 2005. Working with Rudi Cilibrasi to rewrite his original
CompLearn Toolkit, originally developed in Ruby and C, in pure
ANSI C to increase portability. With now 15,000 lines of code under our belts,
we have completed a beta version of the software and made available a library
so that other open-source developers can write their own custom applications.
We also have API Documentation, a Windows drag-and-drop demo,
and Ruby binding. In addition, I have put together the website, written end-user documentation,
and worked with users to resolve installation issues. Future plans include:
- Creating a user manual
- Writing and conducting functional tests
- Converting the website into a Ruby on Rails application which will offer a bug tracking system and the ability for users to share their own applications and experiments
What's Ongoing & in the Pipeline
British Society of Amsterdam, britsoc.nl
November 10, 2005. I currently maintain the BritSoc membership
database, develop marketing material, coordinate with the webmaster on website
issues, and write an article for the monthly newsletter on occasion. Over the
last year, I've helped give the Society a more contemporary look by designing
its 3-fold brochure, letterhead, and membership card. I also conceived and
designed the
recent advertisement which appears in the 2005-2006 Expatica Survival Guide (18MB).
I have most recently created marketing material for the year's two biggest
events: Bonfire Night and the Charity Christmas Ball. Currently, I am creating
a Ruby on Rails application to replace their current website, so as to allow
members to update their own information.
Edgar Portraits, edgarportraits.com
July 27, 2005. Edgar Jansen is a local portrait artist who first came to me needing technical assistance for his home office. Since then, I have been maintaining his website on a continual basis, expanding the online gallery, creating new sections, resizing images, and generating graphics when needed. Most recently, I've added a simple guestbook.
AsiaQuake.org, asiaquake.org
June 15, 2005. Rudi Cilibrasi and I started this Ruby on Rails website in response to the late 2004 Tsunami disaster in the East Indian Ocean. We are currently not maintaining the site. However, we see it as a jumping off point in developing an application that will promote and provoke government accountability and transparency.
Galerie Jan Steen, galeriejansteen.com
June 15, 2005. This gallery for local artist Lydia de
Jonge needed a web presence. I took care of registering the domain,
finding a hosting provider, and creating a website based on their
specifications. I work closely with Lydia to update the online gallery every
month.
Tsunamihelp.info, tsunamihelp.info
June 15, 2005. I currently administer this information portal along with Rudi Cilibrasi. Since its inception in January 2005, it has generated much interest in the media and on the internet, and has been host to over 100,000 unique visitors.
What I Put to Bed (for now...)
Sneaker Amsterdam, sneakeramsterdam.com
June 2005. This local health & fitness business intially needed someone to revive an aging laptop 2 years ago. I have since then come to the rescue and offered advice for various other computer issues. Most recently, I helped get their website launched and provided training so that they can make updates to the website themselves.
Carla Baarspul, carlabaarspul.nl
May 2005. Carla Baarspul had not had her website updated in over a year, as her original designer was no longer available. I stepped in to expand the gallery, provide better navigation, and add consistency through stylesheets. Most recently, I handed the reins over to Carla after a few tutoring sessions in HTML, CSS, and Photoshop.
English Bookshop, www.englishbookshop.nl
May 2005. This long-established business was recently obtained by new owners who wanted a fresher look for the website. I provided them with a simple design, which they could maintain easily through my training. Most recently, I took photographs of the shop in order to promote its rental.
XProgramming.com, xprogramming.com
April 2005. Ron Jeffries needed a new look for his website, but wanted to abandon tables as a design choice and instead go for a pure CSS solution. In a month, we established a design which integrated the look of his custom index cards along with the feel of being handwritten. Other skills put to use in creating this design were JavaScript, XML/XSLT/XSLT, a bit of Perl, and Photoshop.
daflipside.com, daflipside.com
February 2005. I started this website as a personal development
project for a few reasons: 1) learn more about my Filipino heritage, 2) refine
my programming skills, 3) enhance my web development skills. I began
programming the site in php with a MySQL backend, then soon after rewrote it in
Active Record
to familiarize myself with Ruby. As a
natural progression, I converted the site into a full-blown Ruby on Rails application. Though I am no
longer developing it, I often return to the source in order to grab a few code
snippets here and there.
